Jamestown is first permanent settlement in North America, modern day Virginia, was founded by the London Company.

The London Company was a joint stock company started by King James I. Like the British West India Company which colonizes the Caribbean, the London Company colonizes the coastal United States.

In 1606, the London Company sent out 3 ships, Susan Constant, Godspeed, and Discovery, to start a colony. They sailed to America to find a good suitable place. They landed near Chesapeake Bay, and traveled inward on the James River for about 40 miles, till they agreed on the settlement site on May 24, 1607. Though the first few years were hard, this was the first English colony to survive in North America. Some of the original buildings were preserved to this day.

In 1608, new colonists arrived from Germany and Poland to join the Englishmen. Captain John Smith, became the third president, and helped the colonists work together. He had a quote saying "if anyone would not work, neither would he eat" and became quite popular.

However, John had to return to England to recover from a wound where he incurred in 1609. During 1609-1610, it was nicknamed "The Starving Time", the mortality rate was 80%. Due to the lack of food and no new supplies from England, due to storms. But finally 1614, the colony was able to make its first profit, and that was tobacco.

John Rolfe, a colonist, planted a crop of tobacco in 1610 and harvested it in 1614, and tobacco became famous in Jamestown, and he became very wealthy and married the Indian princess, Pocahontas.

They lived in Jamestown, until Pocahontas became very ill, so they went to England hoping to cure her, but unfortunately she died before even returning to her native home, Virginia.

Finally by 1624, Jamestown finally could stand by itself and was a stable city which would become the future colony of Virginia.
