Today I will be talking about the characters of the book 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea by Jules Verne. 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea is a classic book published in 1870, by a famous French writer Jules Verne. The book is about the underwater adventures with Captain Nemo, Professor Aronnax, Ned Land, and the servant Counseil in the submarine ship Nautilus.

I will start with Professor Aronnax, he is a professor and a Marine biologist. When Ned Land, a Canadian harpoonist, Counseil, his servant, and himself get kidnapped by Capt. Nemo, they thought that he was a mean guy, but then Capt. Nemo let them freely roam inside the Nautilus, but have to accompany him underwater. So then they thought he wasn’t that bad. Professor Aronnax is the main character and tells the story, he learns a lot more stuff about the sea when he travels than learning from his books throughout the story.

Captain Nemo is the captain of the submarine Nautilus, he is sometimes mysterious and we don’t really know much about him. He built the Nautilus cause he really hates land and wants to be “away” from men, and really likes the sea.

Ned Land, he is the harpoonist in the story and is the best of the world and wanted to kill this “sea creature”. He is also kidnapped with Professor Aronnax and Counseil, and is adventuring under the sea with them. He first hates the Nautilus when he was kidnapped, but then comes to enjoy it, he also loves the sea and animals.

Last but not least is Prof. Aronnax’s servant, Counseil. He is very obedient when it comes to Professor Aronnax, he once saved Professor Aronnax’s life when they fell off a boat. I would say Counseil is very calm and is a very loyal servant.

Captain Nemo is usually very calm in tough situations and is a very peculiar man, Ned Land on the other hand is very brave and always suspects Captain Nemo when he is not present. But they both love the sea, but as time goes on living underwater, Ned Land gets sick of it and wants to hunt on land and be free.

So I would say, every character has it’s own personalities and the character development are very interesting throughout the book. At the end, we don’t know what happened to Captain Nemo and I was really frustrated.

When I first read the book, I thought it would’ve been boring, since I’m not a sea adventure person, but throughout the book, it seemed to get better, and I enjoyed some parts of the book. I’d say it’s a good book, but it’s not my favorite, but if you love the sea and adventures then I’d recommend it.
